Is it possible to power a household entirely by solar power?

One of the most common questions about solar energy is this– is it possible to power a household entirely by solar power? The answer to this question is, in fact, yes.

You can indeed power your entire household solely by solar power. However, it will not be an easy task. Many people have already tried it because of the huge savings you can get, but they encountered a few difficulties.

Here are a few things you have to consider before using solar power in your entire household:

Location of your house

The first thing is the location of your house. If you’re thinking of using solar energy, you should be situated in a place with direct sunlight, longer daytime than nighttime, and as much as possible, not prone to bad weather.

A 100-watts solar power needs at least 8 hours of full sunlight to generate 1 kWh per day, equivalent to lighting up one light bulb. Sure enough, you wouldn’t just be using one bulb in your entire household.

Appliances in your house

The next thing you should be mindful of is the appliances and equipment you use in your house.

Generally, appliances related to cooling and heating, such as your air conditioner, refrigerator, and heater, need more electricity than your regular home items. If you’re used to having one of these, you need more solar panels and power inverters with larger capacities.

A regular window-type air conditioner that runs for 4.4 hours needs 15.4 kWh to function, while a mid-size refrigerator needs 6.44 kWh. These rates are at their standard functioning mode; they require more power when starting up because of their compressors.

Installation fees

Lastly, while solar power is an excellent investment, its installation can be costly.

A high-quality 100-watts solar panel is approximately $150. You would need at least 20 of those to power up an entire household. You would also need inverters and generators that cost around $500, respectively. On top of all these, you’d need professional help in installing your equipment.
